And You Stay

And you stay when my thoughts spill like vomit on the ground,
when my tears get heavy and fog the room all around.
When I damage my possessions, when I scream so profound,
when I mark the walls with blood, while tears fall down.
And you stay when I can’t shake you with my lyrics,
and you don’t fault me for my guilty admissions.
You stay in rhythm with my loud galloping heart,
knees weak, breath heavy; I’m always falling apart.
And you stay, and don’t flinch when I throw fists in the air,
and when I want to give up, I know that you’re there.
Indeed, you wipe the spit from my mouth, the worry and fear,
when I scream obscenities no one else should hear.
And you stay while my mind is a whirlwind of thunder,
when the windows of my eyes seem clouded and darker.
You blanket me with protection. You anoint me through tears,
and again, you whisper softly that you are near.
And you stay when time ceases, and I’m frantic,
and I keep pleading you’ll let me cease existing.
I hear war drums echoing ambition in my ears,
as you keep me grounded and humble, rebuking fear.
You take me as I am
and meet me where I stand.
Whether I’m in the valley,
or cliff-diving off of rage,
you see me,
and you stay.
